Barnesville
Lamar County, Georgia is home to Barnesville…the proclaimed Buggy Capitol of the South! Nestled approximately fifty miles from the Atlanta metropolitan area, this lovely hamlet came to be when an Indian fighter by the name of Jenks sold a small wilderness clearing to Gideon Barnes in 1826.
Some of the subsequently built structures are still in use today; like the cotton warehouse now housing the city’s electrical department. Even the established Atlanta to Macon railway running through Barnesville is an active line used for freight shipping.
Today, amidst tree-lined streets, residents enjoy walking tours, antique shoppes, wonderful murals, and the architecture that enriches the beauty of this unique little town. Featuring excellent schools and family-friendly neighborhoods there’s a lovely tranquility here juxtaposed with easy access to the major metropolises.
As the Chamber of Commerce exclaims, “Welcome to Barnesville, where the welcome is as warm as the Georgia sun!”
